Higgins Beach is a Northeast oceanside town at its best
Higgins Beach is famous for its family-friendly seaside feel, surfing, striped bass fishing, the beach’s charm, and the shipwreck buried in the sand(when low tide). It makes for a great day trip destination from downtown Portland, Maine just a short beautiful drive away (20 minutes).
Higgins Beach has everything you need for the ideal beach getaway, regardless of your hobbies. The simple joys of Higgins include sunbathing, kayaking, surfing, fly fishing at the river, strolling in the dawn, and even getting married.
History of Beach Access for Public
The beach has been open to the public for as long as the town can remember, but there aren’t many public parking spots, only about 75. So, be sure to get there bright and early.
Higgins Beach even has a Shipwreck
The ship was believed to have originated from the Great Lakes region of the United States and was estimated to have been built in the mid-19th century. It measured approximately 140 feet long and had a cargo hold capable of carrying up to 1,200 tons of goods. The wooden beams that survived the initial shipwreck are currently being kept in a warehouse while they search for a more permanent location.
